"Winner Takes Ball" is the forty-sixth episode of the second season (and ninety-eighth episode overall) of Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja.[1] It premiered on June 22, 2015.[2]

Synopsis[]

Randy accidentally sends Howard on a quest for the final Sorcerer's Ball.[3]

Plot[]

The story continues from the previous episode. When the Sorcerer Ball broke, its contents leaked into the sewers, infiltrating Norrisville's water supply. Randy almost drinks a glass of it, but Howard interrupts him; thereafter, Heidi drinks Randy's stanked water and her eyes begin to glow green. While the boys try to decide where to go, the townspeople start to drink the mysterious green water.

Randy and Howard go to the Game Hole where they discover Greg digging inside the arcade. It becomes apparent that everyone in town now has glowing green eyes and is digging for "the Ultimate Prize." The boys jump to the conclusion that this is some contest, and Howard is eager to participate, though neither knows what they are digging for.

Breaking his previously given promise to Howard, Randy enters the Nomicon and is greeted by First Ninja, who tells him that if the Sorcerer Balls are combined, an unfamiliar foe will appear. First Ninja tells Randy to protect the balls at any cost. Randy goes back to his house to protect the one in his bag there, and finds a be spelled Theresa seeking it. She attempts to get the ball, but Randy shuts her up in his closet.

Meanwhile, Howard has figured out that the other Sorcerer's Ball is in the old Norrisville quarry. The townspeople follow him there, and Randy shows up as well, to protect the ball; he and Howard squabble over its possession. Evil Julian appears to attempt to seize the ball for himself, revealing to Randy how the broken ball infected the water, allowing him to control all the people.

The townspeople tries to steal the quarry ball from Howard, but Randy finds that he too can control the townspeople using the ball from his bag. The contest of wills switches back and forth between Randy and Evil Julian inside the steep and dangerous quarry pit, until Julian induces Howard (who has been infected by the ball) to approach the edge of the pit in danger of his life.

Julian tells Randy to choose between saving his friend or the balls; Randy relinquishes the balls to save Howard. Julian fuses all three of the balls, retrieving the energy enslaving the townspeople and turning them back to normal; he promptly vanishes. Howard thanks Randy for being stupid enough to save him.

The skies over Norrisville grow dark and ominous, foreboding the reign of Evil Julian. Randy and Howard return to Randy's house, after Randy is unable defeat Evil Julian and recover the balls. There, they find Theresa still in Randy's closet, as Randy opens the door Theresa is back to normal, and she doesn't remember why she is inside the closet. Randy acts quite nervous about this as he shyly greets Theresa, which Howard snarks at him for being "smooth".

Trivia[]

  • The title is a pun on the phrase "Winner Takes All."
  • First Ninja appears in this episode.
  • Theresa is voiced by Grey DeLisle instead of Sarah Hyland in this episode, as during production of this episode, Sarah Hyland was busy filming for the then-running show Modern Family.
    • Despite previously under possession when this happened, Theresa is the only student and friend of Randy, aside from Howard, to visit Randy's old house before he later moves to his new house in "Ball's Well That Friends Well".
      • This also marks Theresa's current final speaking role in the series.
  • All four Chaos Pearls have been found and are now in the possession of Evil Julian.
  • Randy is nearly corrupted by the Chaos Pearls when he uses one. This indicates that while the Ninja Suit can protect the Ninja against Stank, it can't fully resist other types of dark magic or possession.
  • When Cyborg Julian first strikes the Ninja in the quarry, a green barrier was momentarily seen protecting the Ninja. This was likely due to the Power Ball that was in Randy's possession.
  • Running Gag: Randy falling into a hole.
